complementaryroleinthisglobalactivity,howeverinlandwaterwaytransporthasbe-
comemoresignificantduetoitseconomicandenvironmentalfeatures.meworldbiggest
portlocationsintheriverestuarieshighlightthispotentialforfurtherdevelopmentofthe
maritimeandinlandwaterwaytransportcooperation.merefore,thepotentialforincreas-
ingthemodalshareofinlandwaterwaytransportisstillgrowing.
Consideringtheconditionsofglobalcompetition,maritimeshipping,inlandwater-
waytransportaswellasportoperationsareperformedinaccordancewithstricttechno-
logicalandoperationalstandards.Alltheseactivitiesaresubjecttoseveretimepressure,
theimperativeofeconomisation,andtothemostimportantprincipleofall:providing
theseoperationswiththehighestpossiblelevelofsafetyandsecurity.
