areas.Apartfromdwellingquarters,knownforex-

amplefromAreasSR,P,M,SS,SD,Dnumerous

burialswerefoundwithinthesettlement’slimits.

IntheMitanniperiod,settlementhadmovedbe-

yondthemaintell,tothewesternpartofthesite

(AreaA),wherethemainresidentialdistrictwas

uncovered.Atthattime,thecitadelwasmainly

usedasaburialgroundformembersofthelocal

eliteand,toasmallextent,forresidentialpurpos-

es.AftertheMitanniperiod,whenTellArbidwas

awellprosperingcenter,therewasaninterruption

insettlementupuntiltheIronAge,fromwhich

asmall-scaleNeo-Babylonian(IronAgeIIIa)set-

tlementisknown,uncoveredinthewesternpart

ofthesite(AreaA)(Koliński,Reiche2008).The

latesttracesofoccupationcomefromtheHelle-

nisticperiod(AreasAandD),whenTellArbidwas

aratherprosperoussettlement,whichmaybeev-

idencedbytherichlyfurnishedgravesfromthat

period.ScarceevidencepointstoSeleucid/Parthi-

anandRomanpresenceonthesite.

1.3RESEARCHHISTORY

TellArbidwasthesubjectofarchaeologicalstud-

iesconductedbythePolish-SyrianArchaeological

MissionheadedbyPiotrBieliński.Thestudieswere

jointlyconductedbythePolishCentreofMediter-

raneanArchaeologyoftheUniversityofWarsaw

andtheDirectionGeneralofAntiquitiesandMu-

seums,Damascus,onbehalfofwhichtheworkwas

headedbyDrAhmadSerriyehandsubsequentlyby

JowanQassemandAbedAbdelMesihiBaghdo(see

relevantpreliminaryreportsinPolishArchaeology

intheMediterraneanvolumes8through22).Ex-

cavationonthesitebeganin1996andcontinued

everyyearuntil2010when,duetotheoutbreak

ofwarinSyria,ithadtobestopped.Previousar-

chaeologicalstudieswereconductedonthesite

butnotonalargescale.In1936,M.E.L.Mallowan

performedsurveysandarchaeologicalexcava-

tionswithinseveraltrenches(Mallowan1937:117;

Koliński2007).TellArbidwasalsothesubjectof

surveyscarriedoutbyBertilleLyonnet(2000).
