ofthecourtyardincludeapestle,anarrow-fenes-
tratedpotstand,andabowlwithlugs.
Theeasternpartofthecourtyardwastak-
enupbyahearth(H5).Somepartsofthehearth
havebeendestroyed.Mostprobably,itwascir-
cularorsemicircular.Thehearthslabwasmade
ofclaymixedwithgravelandframedwithmud-
brickswhichhavesurvivedinthenorthernpart.
Rightnexttothehearth,alongsidethewallwhich
enclosedthecourtyardintheeast,tworowsof
mudbrickswerelaidtoformaca.0.5mwidestrip.
Thesemudbricksmadeupakindofbenchwhich
mayhaveservedasaworkingplatformusedinthe
contextofthehearth.Therewasnosubstantial
floorlevelrelatedtothehearth,onlyasheswith
somemudbrickfragments.Fragmentsofandirons,
whichmayhavebeenconnectedwiththehearth,
comefromitssurroundings.
Intheyoungerusagephase(stratum4b),the
courtyardcontainedtwotannurs,ahearthand
grindingstones[seeFig.3.25:1].Thecourtyard
wasdividedintotwoactivityareas.Theeastern
partwasconnectedwiththeactivitythatemployed
fireinstallations.Thewesternpart,withnofirein-
stallations,accommodatedtheactivityinwhich
grindingstoneswereused.Inthewesternpartof
thecourtyard,amudbrickpatchworkpredom-
inatedtocreateakindofusagelevel,andinthe
easternparttherewasaclearpredominanceofash-
esassociatedwithfireinstallations.Layersofashy
materialwereprobablythesweepingsofspentfuel
fromovensandhearths.
Thewesternpartofthecourtyardcontained
threesetsofgrindingstones.0neset(Set3)in-
cluded1basaltgrinder(preservedinfragments)
and1basaltgrindingslab,foundintwofragments.
Nexttothegrindingstones,thesameareaalso
yieldedawarpedbowlwithapointedbase,some
wastepotteryandseveralstoneswhichmayhave
alsobeenusedasgrindingstones.Thesecondset
ofgrindingstones(Set2),locatedca.1meastof
thefirstone,consistedof3basaltgrinders(pre-
servedinfragments),1basaltgrindingslaband
1pestle.Thisusagelevel,associatedwithgrind-
ingstones,alsocontainedasmalljar.Thesetsof
grindingstoneswereseparatedwithasinglerow
ofmudbrickslaidinonelayerwhichformakind
ofbench.Thethirdclusterofstones(Set4)was
foundatashortdistancenorthwestofthefirstone.
Itincluded2limestonedoorsockets,1basaltdoor
socket,1basaltgrinderand1limestonemortar.
Smallclustersofsherdsareatypicalfeature
ofthecourtyardinstratum4b.Sherdswerelaid
horizontallyinalayerofpackedearth,directlyon
ashes.Inthisway,sherdsmadeuphard-surfaced
usagelevelsandperformedafunctionoffootpaths.
Eightsurfacespavedwithsherdscanbedistin-
guished.Theywerefoundedonvariouslevels.The
levelsbuiltofsherdsalsoincludedajar,abowlas
wellasfragmentsofandirons.
Inthesouthernpartofthecourtyard,right
bythewallW23ofroomL12,therewasasetof
