Thispublicationisaresultofarchaeologicalexca-

vationsatTellArbid,asiteinnorth-easternSyria.

TheTellArbidexcavationswerelaunchedin1996

bythePolish-SyrianArchaeologicalMissionhead-

edbyPiotrBieliński(UniversityofWarsaw).The

archaeologicalexcavationsatTellArbidwouldnot

havebeenpossiblewithoutthecollaborationand

supportoftheDirectorateGeneralofAntiquities

andMuseumsinDamascus,headedatthetimeof

thePolish-SyrianArchaeologicalMissionatTell

ArbidbySultanMuhhesen,BassamJammousand

Michelal-Maqdissi.

Thepublicationpresentstheresearchresults

fromoneoftheregionsofTellArbid:AreaD,where

ahousingdistrictdatedtothelateEJZ2-EJZ3was

uncovered.Duetothefactthatthearchaeological

researchwasinterruptedbythewarinSyria,the

AreaDprojectcouldnotbecompletedeither,with

theresultsofsomestudiespresentedinthispubli-

cationbeingpreliminaryoutofnecessity.

Themicro-historyofAreaDhasbeenpresent-

edinthemacro-historicalperspectiveoftheSyrian

Jezirah.ThearchaeologicalresearchonAreaDpro-

vidednewdataforoneofthekeymomentsinthe

developmentoftheSyrianJezirah(EJZ2-EJZ3):

aperiodofsocio-economictransformationsand

anincreaseinthesizeandcomplexityofsites.

Thehouseanditsinhabitantsareoneofthefocal

pointsofthispublication.TheAreaDresearchwas

auniqueopportunitytodiscovervariousaspectsof

howpeoplelivedinamedium-sizedtown,asthat

iswhatTellArbidwasinthelateEJZ2-EJZ3.The

house,itsinhabitantsandtheirdailylifearethe

keyinunderstandingthepastsocieties.Theexplo-

rationofahouseinitsarchitecturalformandof

ahouseholdasasocio-economicunitcomprised

astudyofarchitecture,artefactsanddomestic

features,alongwiththesocialandeconomicor-

ganization.Theanalysisoffaunalandbotanical

remainswasalsoappliedinordertoreconstruct

thesubsistencepracticesoftheAreaDpeople.

AclassificationofAreaDpotteryprovidedabetter

understandingofthechangeswhichtookplacein

theSyrianJezirahinthelateEJZ2-EJZ3.
