Introduction
Inthelastyearsthecriticismofneoclassicaleconomicstogetherwiththe
conceptionofhomoeconomicushasbeenincreasing.Ofcourse,neoclassical
economistshavebeencriticizedfromtheverybeginning.However,recently
thecriticismhasintensified.Itcomesfromwithineconomics,andfromoutside
economics.Neoclassicaleconomicsismostlycriticizedbyothersocialsciences
(e.g.,psychology,sociology,politicalsciences)andphilosophy.Themostvisible
strandofcriticismisdescriptiveanditconcernshomoeconomicus(e.g.,people
arenot:1)fullyrational,2)fullyegoistic,3)atomsindependentofsociety).
Thecriticismalsoconcernsrevealedpreferencetheoryandtheassumptionthat
peopleknowwhatisbestforthem.Beyonddescriptivecriticism,neoclassical
economicsalsofacesmoresophisticatedcriticismfromphilosophy.Thebigpart
ofcriticismconcernsaviewcherishedbymanyeconomiststhateconomicsis
value-free.Thisbeliefisstrongamongsomeeconomistswhothinkthatvalue-
-freenessiswhatdistinguisheseconomicsfromtheothersocialsciencesand
makeseconomicsclosertohardsciences.Amethodologicalcriticismconcerns
alsothemethodusedbyeconomists,e.g.,deduction,theoveruseofmathematics,
overrelianceonmodels,idealizationsandfocusonpredictivepower.
Whenweanalysehowstronglyneoclassicaleconomicshasbeencriticizedinthe
lastyears,itcomesasnosurprisethatnotmanyadmitbeingdiehardneoclassical
economists.Insomecirclesitisadirtywordandnotmanypeoplewanttobe
connectedwithit.Theresultofthisextensivecriticismisthepostulatethat
economicsshouldchange.Namely,itshouldbemorepluralisticandopenfor
heterodoxy.Ofcourse,differentschoolsproposetheirownvisionsofeconomics.
Behaviouraleconomistswanteconomicstoincorporatepsychology,institutional
economistswanteconomicstoincorporatesociology,andphilosophersof
economicswanteconomicstoincorporatephilosophy.
Someeconomistsarguethateconomicshaschangedduetotheincorporationof
theknowledgefromothersocialscienceslikepsychology,sociology,etc.(e.g.
(Cedrini,&Fontana,2018;Colander,2000,2010;Colander,Holt,&Rosser,2004,
2011;Davis,2006,2008;Fontana,2014;Vromen,2007)).Themosttellingcase
isbehaviouraleconomicswhichstartedtobeperceivedasanewmainstream
(Angner,2019;Thaler,2016;Truc,2018).Moreover,itisarguedthateconomics
isnotsoheavilytheoreticalanymoreandwecouldobservelempiricalturn’in
thelastyears(Backhouse,&Cherrier,2017).Ingeneral,theprocessofopening
