1.1NowthesearethenamesofthesonsofIsrael,whocameintoEgypt
(everymanandhishouseholdcamewithJacob):1.2Reuben,Simeon,
Levi,andJudah,1.3Issachar,Zebulun,andBenjamin,1.4Danand
Naphtali,GadandAsher.1.5AllthesoulswhocameoutofJacob’s
bodywereseventysouls,andJosephwasinEgyptalready.1.6Joseph
died,asdidallhisbrothers,andallthatgeneration.1.7Thechildren
ofIsraelwerefruitful,andincreasedabundantly,andmultiplied,and
grewexceedinglymighty;andthelandwasfilledwiththem.

enemies,andfightagainstus,andescapeoutoftheland.”1.11

burdens.TheybuiltstoragecitiesforPharaoh:PithomandRaamses.1.12
Butthemoretheyafflictedthem,themoretheymultipliedandthe
moretheyspreadout.Theyweregrievedbecauseofthechildren
ofIsrael.1.13TheEgyptiansruthlesslymadethechildrenofIsraelserve,
1.14andtheymadetheirlivesbitterwithhardservice,inmortarand
inbrick,andinallkindsofserviceinthefield,alltheirservice,
inwhichtheyruthlesslymadethemserve.
1.15ThekingofEgyptspoketotheHebrewmidwives,ofwhomthe
nameoftheonewasShiphrah,andthenameoftheotherPuah,1.16and
hesaid,“WhenyouperformthedutyofamidwifetotheHebrew
women,andseethemonthebirthstool;ifitisason,thenyoushall
killhim;butifitisadaughter,thensheshalllive.”1.17Butthe
