TherstpublicwordsontheSeptember11,2001terroristattackswereproduced
themomenttheeventsbegantohappen.Merelyreportingbarefactsbroadcastlive,
theywerestunnedandsparse,“asifthemediaitselfhadgoneintoshock”(Houen,2).
Significantly,fromtheverybeginningtheirrelationtotherealityofwhatwas
happeningwasproblematic.Atrstitwasjustlackofinformation.At8:46a.m.the
rstplanehittingtheNorthToweroftheWTCwasdescribedinexactlysuchterms:
aplanehittingaskyscraper.Forthenextsixteenminutes,totheonlookers’knowledge,
nothingmoresinisterthanatragicaccidentwastakingplace.Butthen,afterapause
“togivetheworldtimetogatherrounditsTVsets”(Amis,4),thesecondplanehitthe
othertowerandthisexcessivedoublingofeventsdominoedanexcessofinformation
seeminglyimpossibletoprocess.
However,alreadyonSeptember11theprocessofmanagingoftheensuing
chaosbegan:theorderingvocabulary,rst“attack”andthen“war,”soonbecamethe
dominantwordsonterror,especiallyafter“waronterror”wasannounced.Afterthe
initialstutter,thepubliclanguagebecamemoreuent,rigorous,asifitcouldreverse
oratleastreplacewhatthe“bigpicture”“spelledout”:“Ifoneweretoslowdown
avideotapeofthefirstplaneapproachingthenhittingthenorthtower(…)andthen
zoomintotheinstantsofimpact,onewouldseetheword,American’slide,letterby
letter,intooblivion”(Smith);onewouldalsosee“theviolentobliterationoftheword
,UNITED’”(ibid.).
TheattacksofSeptember11,2001were“themostheinousandgiganticterrorist
missioneverperpetrated”(Borradori,48),a“uniquenewcatastrophe”(Kaplan,137)
andwithit,saysMartinAmis,we“enteredadistinctphaseinhistory”(21).“September11,
2001,hasbeenmuchinflated,itsimpactsexaggerated,itsrealeffectssmotheredin
hyperbole,”saysTerrySmith,addingnonethelessthat“thedeepershifts”ofwhichthis
dayisasymptom“cannotbedenied.”Whenthetowers,twoofthetallestbuildingsin
theworld,locatedattheheartofthegreatesteconomicandmilitarypowerintheworld,
ceasedtoexistinourreality,theyacquiredasymbolic,ghostlypresenceinalternative
reality,thevirtualrealityofthemind:memory,mythandimagination,languageand
allmodesofrepresentation.9/11today“carriessomanyburdensofinterpretation,
ofsentimentality,ofpolitics,ofwarthatsometimesit’shardtondtherubbleofthe
actualeventbeneaththelayersofedificewe’vebuiltontopofit”(Rich).Thisabstract
edificewillremainunderconstructionalongtimeaftertheNationalSeptember11
MemorialinNewYorkhasbeencompleted,andalongsidethemonumentitwillstand
forthepivotalpointinrecenthistory,markingthebeginningofthe21stcenturyin
everyaspectofglobalculturefrompoliticstoart.
Thepresentstudywillconcentrateononelayerofthisdevelopingstructure:
