Thisvolume,whoseoriginalideawasconceivedin2007,isthecrowningof

manyyearsofmystudiesofLaterRomandiocesanadministrationand,as

partofitsframework-thevicarsofdioceseandtheirjudicature.Itoffers

acriticalreviewofcontemporaryviewsanddiscussionsconcerningthebe-

ginningsofdiocesanorganizationattheturnofthefourthcentury,addresses

theevolutionofthejudiciaryofvicarsandthedeclineoftheirimportance,from

thelatefourthcenturytotheirfinalliquidationunderJustinianI(527-565).

ThestudyalsobrieflypresentssubsequentfatesofLaterRomanadministra-

tionatsupra-provinciallevelduringthereignofthatemperor.Thework

certainlygoesbeyondasynthetic,historical-legalstudy,elaboratingonthemes

relatingtolegaliconography,epigraphyandprosopography.Theanalyses

aresupplementedwithobservationsoriginatingfromothersocialsciences,

suchassociologyandevolutionarypsychology.Theywereappliedinparticu-

lartoaccountforthecausesoftransformationsofthejudiciaryofvicarsand

disappearanceofthatoffice.Idohopethatthankstotheinterdisciplinary

natureofapartoftheanalysesandconclusions,theworkwillproveinter-

estingnotonlytolegalhistoriansandhistoriansassuch,butalsorepresenta-

tivesofcontemporaryjurisprudenceandothersocialsciences.Thisvolume

isarevisedandamendedversionofastudywhichwaspublishedinPolish

in2012,takingintoconsiderationthecommentstothatedition.*
