depictedimageofadministrativetransformationintheLaterEmpire,predom-
inantlyinthefourthcentury.84Apartfromthat,mostattentioninscientific
writingswasdevotedtothearguableissueofconsolidationofdiocesanorgan-
izationandthedependencybetweenthetitlesofvicariusdioeceseosandagens
vicespraefectorumpraetorio.85Theissueofthejudiciaryofvicarswasalsoraised
inworksdiscussingLaterRomancourtproceedings,especiallyonthemargin
ofremarksrelatingtoappealsincognitioextraordinemprocedure;however,
detailedobservationsinthatrespectarelacking,apartfromabriefandinex-
haustivefragmentintherelativelyrecentworkbyFedericoPergami.86
