Thestudyfocusesonvicarsofdioceses(vicariusdioeceseos)oftheLaterRomanEmpireand

theirjudiciarycapacity,whichoccupiedoneoftheprincipalplacesintheirduties.Itisthe

firstattempttopresenttheissueinscholarlyresearch.Thebookcoverstheperiodfromthe

establishmentofdiocesesunderDiocletian(reigning284-305)untilthefinalabolishmentof

vicariatesbyJustinianI(reigning527-565)andhisfurthermodificationsofimperialadmin-

istrationintroducedatasupra-provinciallevel.ItconcernsalldiocesesoftheRomanempire,

excludingdioceseadministratorswithspecialstatus:comesOrientis,praefectusAugustalisand

vicarsresidinginRome(especiallyvicariusurbisRomae).Theauthoremployshistorical-legal

methodology,consistinginananalysisofthejudicatureofdiocesanvicarsbasedonlegal

sources,supplementedbyiconographic,literaryandepigraphicalsources,andprosopo-

graphy.Hedrawsontheconclusionsresultingfromtheresearchofsociologists,sociobio-
