Introduction

ThismonographisaD.Sc.thesisandpresentsauthor’sworkintheCMSexperiment[1]and,in

particular,inthemuontriggergroups.Thelongandveryactiveworkinthemuontriggergroup,

participationinsystemdesign,operationandupgradeworks,motivatedauthortoemphasizethatin

thetitleofthepresentedmonograph.ThepresentedmonographalsooverviewsmainCMSphysics

results,includingthosetowhichtheauthorwascontributingandwhichusethereconstructiontools

developedbytheauthor.

Theauthorhasbeenamemberofthecollaborationsincethebeginning[2]ofCMS.The

author’sworkismainlyfocusedontheLevel-1muontriggerbasedonsignalsfromRPCdetectors

(seeforexample[3–8]).Howeveritalsoextendstogeneraltriggeractivities,detectorstudies,event

reconstructionandphysics.

Theresultsofauthor’sworkonphysics,triggerandreconstructionwereincludedinseveral

majorCMSdesigndocuments,includingLetterofIntent[2],TechnicalProposal[9]andTechnical

DesignReports(TDR):Level-1TDR[10],HLTTDR[11](also[12])andPhysicsTDR,Vol.1[13].

Themonographisorganizedinchapters.IntheﬁrstchaptertheCMSdetectorispresented.

Itsoperationandearlyperformanceresultsarediscussed.Inthesecondchapter,theCMSLevel-1

triggersystemispresentedwiththeemphasisonthemuonpart.Thetriggerperformanceresultsare

alsoshown.TheHigh-Leveltriggerisdiscussedinthirdchapter.Themuonandtrackreconstruction

methodsarepresented.Theperformanceisanalyzed.ThenextchapterisdedicatedtoCMSphysics

results.ItincludesHiggsbosondiscoveryandselectionofothermeasurements.TheCMSupgrade

perspectivesarediscussedinthesummary.

Therearethreeappendicestothemonographtopresentaspectsofeventreconstructionin

whichauthor’scontributionwasparticularlyprominent,andaglossaryofacronyms.Intheﬁrst

appendixtheperformanceoftheRPCtriggerispresented.Areviewofsimpliﬁedreconstruction

withthePixelDetector,usedalsoforseedingandrelevanttoChapter3,isgiveninthesecond

appendix.Themuonisolationstudiesareincludedinthethirdappendix.

Thismonographisbasedontherevisedconferencereportsgivenbytheauthoronbehalfof

theCMScollaboration[14–19],author’scontributiontoCMSTDRs[10,11,13]andontheCMS
