electionswereoverwhelminglywonbytheFlemishseparatistparty:the
Nieuw-VlaamsAlliantie(N-VA).Theelectoralvictorytriggeredananti-
EUpoliticalfogaroundtheN-VA.However,theFlemishseparatistshave
aclearpro-Europeanideology.Subsequently,thearticleincludesabrief
analysisofthehistoricalandsocio-economicdynamicsthatledBelgium
tohaveregionalismasthecommonpoliticalthreadofitsstatestructure.
ThearticlealsoassessesthepoliticalambitionsoftheN-VA.Itaimsto
demonstratethattheEuropeanUnionisusedbytheN-VA,basedonpolitical
andphilosophicaltensions,tointellectuallyandelectorallynormalisethe
FlemishnationalistprojectinBelgiumandintheEU.Thesetensionspresent
inotherEUMemberStatescouldquestionorreinforcetheexistingpolitical
structuresoftheEuropeanUnion.
