Giventheforegoing,thecurrentinvestigationoccupiesanicheleftbyre-
searchersstudyingtheimportanceoflinguisticfactorsinjudicialsettingsand,
inparticular,itcomplementsotherexplorationsfocusingonmarkersofjudi-
cialstanceingeneral.Tothisend,thegoalofthepresentstudyistoprovide
afullerpictureofjudicialdiscourseand,selectingthenotionofconcessivity
initsdiscourse-pragmaticdimensionastertiumcomparationis,todescribethe
realisationofConcessionfromacontrastiveperspective.Morespecically,the
researchraisesquestionsastowhetherjudgmentswrittenintwoIndo-European
languagessuchasEnglishandPolishfollowthesameargumentativeschemata
andemploythesamediscourse-pragmaticmeanstomarkit,andwhetherCon-
cessionperformssimilarfunctionsinthetwosubcorporaanalysed.Inaddition,
thestudyisintendedasapointofdepartureforfurtherinvestigationscentred
aroundlinguisticvariation,especiallythatobservedinthejudicialvarietiesof
EnglishandPolish,respectively.
Thebookiscomposedoftwomajorcomponents:PartIpresentingtheoretical
considerationsandPartIIreportingtheresultsofanempiricalstudy,followedby
Conclusionssummarisingthendingsandsuggestingtheirapplications.
PartIconsistsofthreechapters.ChapterOneconstitutesanoverviewofap-
proachestothestudyofconcessivity.Itstartswithasurveyoftraditionaldeni-
tionsofconcessiveconnection,especiallyasseenbyEnglish,PolishandGer-
manresearchersworkingwithinthesemantic-syntacticparadigm.Againstthis
background,thedenitionofCONCESSIONadvancedbyRhetoricalStructure
Theoryscholarsispresented,withemphasisplacedontheroleofthisrhetorical
relationinthestructuringofmonologictexts.Adoptedastheanalyticalframe-
workforthecurrentstudy,thediscourse-pragmaticconceptofConcessionis,on
theotherhand,describedinthethirdsubchapter,addressinginparticular:the
understandingofConcessionasaninteractionalsequenceofmoves,identica-
tionofthemovesthemselvesaswellasvariouscongurationsofthemovesin
theformofConcessiveschemataidentiableinspokenandwrittendiscourse.
ThesaidsubchapteralsoshedslightonthepragmaticsignallingofConcession,
withadistinctionmadeintosyndeticandasyndeticlinkingandattentiondrawn
tostancemarkerssubsumingtruth-evaluatingelements.
ChapterTwois,inturn,devotedtoargumentationtheories,withprominence
giventoframeworksdesignedforananalysisofjudicialargumentation.Asthis
chapteroffersbothlegalandlanguage-orientedperspectives,toprovideasuf-
cientbackground,itbeginswiththedescriptionofthesubjectmatterofargu-
mentativestudiesandsketchesageneraloutlineofthehistoricalrootsofargu-
mentativediscoursestudies.Next,thenotionoflegalargumentationisdiscussed
andattentionisdrawnespeciallytoitsjudicialcomponent.Inthiscontext,as-
sumptionsunderlyingvarioustheoriesoflegalargumentationareexplained,
startingwiththehistoricalperspectiveandnishingwiththepragma-dialectical
model.Thelatter,combiningrhetoricalanddialecticalaspects,issituatedas
aframeworkappliedintheeldofgeneralargumentationtheoryaswellas
