thatarisesfromexercisingthefullpowerofhisimaginationandunderstanding
againsttheunyieldingevidencethatsurvivethepast.”11
Linguisticsismuchunderappreciateddomainamonghistorians,whichfre-
quentlyleadstonumerousmisunderstandingsofhistoricalsituationsbecause
ofincorrectlydefinedwords.Wordsmeandiferentthingsindiferentcultures,
andevendiferentthingsindiferentepochsofthesameculture.BertrandRus-
sellonceuponatimestressedtheroleoflogicandlanguageinthesearchfor
truth.Russellwrotethat:uIftherewereascienceofhistory,itsfactswouldbe
deducedfromgenerallaws,whichwouldcomefirstinthelogicalorder.Inthe
epistemologicalorder,mostofusarecontenttobelieve,about(say)JuliusCae-
sar,whatwefindinreliablebooks.Butthecriticalhistorianmustgotomanu-
scriptsandinscriptions;hisdataarecertainshapes,ofwhichtheinterpretation
