byspruceaquicklygrowingspecies,whichwasplantedintotheforestphy-
tocoenoses(Danielewicz2012).JustbeforeWorldWarII,firtreescoveredonly
1—2%oftheforestarea;inthemid-1960s0.5%(Wilczkiewicz1976);in1978
0.4%(Zientarskietal.1994)andin1983only0.2%(Boratyński1983).
Thefirresourceshavebeendestroyedbythefollowingfactors:WorldWarII,the
wronguseofcultivationtechniquesafterthewar(itwastreatedthesameway
asspruce),thegradualextinctionoftheforestduetostrongairpollutionand
thecanopyopeningasaresultofthedestructionoftheforeststandbyvarious
naturalfactors(Zientarskietal.1994).
Thefindingsofcontemporarystudiesindicatethatinthepastthefirwas
acommonspeciesatanaltitudinalgradientof350—800ma.s.l.intheSudetes
andintheirForelands,whileitssharemighthaveevenbeenashighas50—60%
(Boratyński1983).Actually,itsverticaldistributionisproportionaltotheshare
offorestareainparticularzonalcategoriesandisdifferentinvariousrangesof
theSudetes.Thelatitudinaldistributionoffirisofadirectionalcharacter
theshareoffirincreasesfromNWtoSE.Thehighestshareoffirperareaunit
isfoundintheBardzkieMts.,thenintheTableMts.(GóryStołowe)andthe
BystrzyckieMts.(Filipiak,Barzdajn2004).
DuringtheirinventoryworksintheSudetes,FilipiakandBarzdajn(2004)
identified2575firlocalitiesintotal.Oftheapproximately32500specimens
thatwerelaterstudied,themajorityofthemwascreatedbyspecimensthatwere
morethan50yearsold.Thesegrewon2008localities(theotherswerecultiva-
tionsandup-growths).Firtreesmostfrequentlyoccurredasscatteredgroupsof
specimensinsmallgroupsorassingletrees.Only5%offoreststandslocalities
hadafulldensity,36%amoderatedensity,andupto59%aloosedensity.
Only1%ofthelocalitieswerecoveredbyforeststandscomposedofmorethan
100oldertrees(over50yearsold).One-firlocalitiescomprised12%ofthein-
ventorygroup,whereaslocalitieswithfewerthantenspecimenscomprised63%.
Firtreesoccurredonslopeswithdifferentinclinationsandexposures,usuallyin
concaveformsoftheterrain.Themostfrequentlyoccupiedhabitatswereclas-
sifiedintoamixedmountainforesttypesite(anLMGtypesiteaccording
toPolishclassificationsystem),whichcomprisesthelargestareaintheSudetes
andthenamountainforesttypesite(anLGtypesite),amixedconiferous
mountainforesttypesite(aBMGtypesite),anuplandmixedforesttypesite
(anLMwyżtypesite)oraconiferousmountainforesttypesite(aBGtypesite)
(Boratyński,Filipiak1997;Filipiak2006).
Aggregationsoffirtreesinpatchesofastronglytransformedsecondary
communitywithadominationofspruce,weremoresimilartotheconiferous
communitiesthantothepotentialphytocoenosesofLuzuloluzuloidis-Fagetum.
TheseuntypicalpatchesprevailedovertypicallydevelopedLuzuloluzuloidis-
-FagetumassociationphytocoenosesintheSudetes.Moreover,firoccurredin
