fromsexualrelationsthroughoutapregnancy.TheVictoriansgenerally
believedthatusexualindulgence”orevenuamativeexcitementonthe
partofthemother,withoutindulgence”coulddamagethehealthofthe
unbornchildorleaditintofutureudestructivevice”.Inparticular,uvio-
lentcoitioninsexualintercourse,shouldbecautiouslyavoided,tosave
thepreciouslittlebeinginthewombfromdisplacementofitslimbs,or
spinaldistortion,whichmightresultinpermanentphysicaldeformity;
foralthoughremarkablywellprotectedbysurroundingmembranes,
fluids,andthemuscularwallsoftheuterus,thefoetusissometimes
deformed”bysuchactions.57
