ofprenatalcarewastofocusonthenatural,andgoodhealthmeantthat
alltheelementsofthehumanconstitution,thatisthefourhumours,had
tobeperfectlybalanced,avoidingbothweaknessandplethora,orfullness.
Mostpregnantwomenwerethoughttobeplethoricandweretreatedvia
aloweringsystem,whichincludedbloodlettingbyleechingorcupping,
oradministeringdosesofanuopening”(laxative)medicine.However,the
mostimportantpartoftheloweringsystemwasdiet:pregnantwomen
weregivenucoolingfoods”suchasfruitsandvegetables,andprohibited
fromeatinguheatingfoods”suchasmeat,eggs,andspices.Theywerealso
forbiddentheating”beverages,likecoffee,tea,andalcohol.144

Queenenjoyedeatinganddrinking,andevenwhenshewasstillagirlUncle
Leopoldwrotejokinglythathehadheardthatuacertainlittleprincess…
