Tedebateonintegratingcontentandlanguagelearninglteaching,whichhas
beengoingonformorethanfifyyearsnow,hastakenmanyroutesworldwidewith
theviewtofindingefcientwaysofcounterbalancingcontentandlanguageaspects
ofinstructioninawidespectrumofL2andFLcontexts.Asaconsequenceofahigh
primaryevaluationofimmersionprogrammesintroducedinCanadainthe1960s,
inwhichEnglishandFrenchweretaughtasasecondlanguagethroughschool
subjects,manytheoreticiansandpractitionersfeltmotivatedtotakeanopportunity
toimplementsimilarpracticesintheirowneducationalenvironments.Special
contentandlanguage-orientedcoursesprovedtobeinneedforsuchaddressees
asethnicallyandlinguisticallydiverseL2immigrantstudentsaimingtoacquire
languageproficiencyofL1peerssoastopreparefortheirtertiaryeducation(e.g.in
theUSA,Canada,Australia),parentsaspiringtoenrichtheirchildrenL2fluencyby
studyingselectedcontentsubjectsinthetargetlanguage(e.g.inIndia,Chinaand
Europeancountries),ormembersoftheEuropeanUnioncommunitiesaimingto
developmultilingualandmulticulturaleducationinEurope.
Tefactthatalargenumberofvaryingapproacheswereadoptedonthepath
totheconceptualizationofcontentandlanguageintegration,particularlyinNorth
Americancontextisdepictedbythetermsusedtorefertothisissue.Firstofall,
arangeoftermsputtingcontentinthefirstplacewerecoined,suchas:content-
basedinstruction(CBI),content-basedlanguageteaching(CBLT),content-based
languagelearning(CBLL),content-basedsecondlanguageinstructionorcontent-
basedESLinstruction.Tesecondgroupoftermscomprisedthosewiththe
primaryfocusonthelanguagecomponent,thatislanguageandcontentintegration,
integratedlanguageandcontentinstruction,bilingualeducation,languagesacross
thecurriculum,andlanguageforspecificpurposes(Snow,MetandGenesee,1989;
Brinton,SnowandWesche,1997;LysterandBallinger,2011).Teenumeratedterms
clearlysuggestthatthekindofinstructionadoptediseitherspecificallydirectedat
contenttobeacquiredinthetargetlanguageorthatlanguageisperceivedasthe
majorgoaltobeachievedwhilecoordinatedwiththeselectedcontent.
