Abstract:Thechapterisanextensivesurveyofmaintopics,conceptsanddefinitionsin
thefieldoftranslationalequivalence.Thefirstsectionspresentissuesreflectingtherela-
tionshipbetweenlinguistictheoriesofmeaningandequivalenceintermsof
acomparisonbetweenformal,behaviouralandcognitiveapproachestomeaningand
translation.Touchingupontheconceptofindeterminacyintranslationandthecognitive
notionoflanguagecommensurabilityandtranslationunits,thechapterpresentsatheory
ofreconceptualizationasatheoryoftranslation(Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk2010).
Furthersectionsdiscussdifferenttypesofequivalentstructuresinlanguagesandthe
chapterconcludeswithapresentationofaclassificationofqualitativeandquantitative
equivalencetypesdrawnfromauthenticlanguagecorpusdata.

Translationisbroadlydefinedastherenderingofamessageorinformationfrom
onelanguage(SourceLanguage)intoanotherlanguage(TargetLanguage).In
otherwords,itistheestablishingofthesemantic-ormeaning-equivalence
betweenaSLtext,ormoreprecisely,discourse,andaTLdiscourse.Translation
isnotthesubstitutionofoneTLword/phrase/sentenceforoneSL
word/phrase/sentence.Itisthere-creationofawholeSLdiscourseina(similar
orcomparable)TLcontext,anduttered/writtenwithasimilarfunctionand
asimilarcommunicativeintention.Translation,asanyothercommunicative
content,invariablyinvolvesthere-conceptualizationoftheoriginalSLinfor-
mationintotheTLcontext-andaddressee-mediatedmessage.
