Awareoftheproblemofageing,whichappearstobeincreasinglyimportant
worldwide,wehavedecidedtofocusthiseditionofourquarterlyonthechallenges
facedbytheelderlylivinginruralareas.Selectedarticlespresentdemographic
trends,ageingstudyresults,factorswhichinfluencethesecurityandwell-being
oftheelderlyaswellasanalysesofgovernmentpoliciesandtheoperationsof
institutionswhosegoalistoimprovethequalityoflifeoftheseniorcommunity
inruralareas.Thistime,apartfromourownacademics,weaskedresearchers
fromtheInstituteforFamilyandGenderStudiesoftheVietnamAcademyof
SocialSciencesandTechnologyandtheInstituteofRegionalResearchnamedafter
M.I.DolishniyofNationalAcademyofSciencesofUkrainetosharetheiropinions
onthesubject.Thusourreaderscanreadaboutthreedifferentcountrieswhichshare
onecommonfeature,namelythatinthepasttheirsocio-economicdevelopment
waslargelybasedonagriculture,asaconsequenceofwhichasignificantpercentage
ofthecountries’populationsstillliveinruralareas.Sharingexperienceshowsthat
althoughageingofruralpopulationshasaglobaldimension,measurestotackle
theissueshouldnotextendbeyondthelocaldimension-largelyduetocultural,
demographicandeconomicconditions.Despitethedifferences,onecanalsosee
certainuniversalmechanisms,theanalysisandadaptationofwhichmaybringsome
benefitsalsoinothercountries.
ThespecialeditionofourquarterlystartswithanarticlebyTranThiMinhThi,
InstitutionalandCulturalPerspectivesinElderCareinRuralVietnam.Vietnamese
authorities(incollaborationwithsocialorganisationsanddedicatedinstitutions)
havebeendevelopingahome-basedcommunitycaresystemfortheelderlyand
privateservicestoprovidealternativecareoptionsfortheirelderlypopulation.
