TEACHINGINAGLOBALIZEDWORLD
1.Introduction
Whatsuccessfulforeignlanguageteachingishasalwayspreoccupiedlangua-
geteachers’minds.Thelackofastraightforwardanswertothisquestionderives
fromthefactthat,unlikeanyotherschoolsubject,languageteachingservestwo
mainfunctions.Ontheonehand,teachingalanguageisteachingalresource’
thatcanbetransferredtootherareasandusedbylearnersinvariousaspectsof
theirlives.Ontheotherhand,teachingalanguagecanbereducedtotransmiting
linguisticcontentfromacoursesyllabus,whichisdoneinthecaseofanycour-
setaughtformally.Thepurposeofthischapterisbasicallytodiscusshowsuc-
cessfulforeignlanguageteachingisunderstoodinthefirstdecadesofthetwen-
tyfirstcenturyandpointtospecificclassroomlanguagetasksthatreflectthis
understanding1.
Toachievethis,theauthorfirstdescribesthethreewavesofsuccessfullan-
guageteaching:thelinguisticwave,thecommunicativewave,andtheglobaliza-
tionwave.Thewordlwave’isusedafterGraves[2016]whoappliedthemeta-
phorofawaveforthedescriptionofteachingsyllabuses.Themetaphoroflwave’
seemsmoreaccuratethan,forexample,astageoraphase,asitrepresentsan
ever-movingandchangingenvironment.Althoughpresentedchronologically,
allthethreeperiodsoverlap.Likerealwavestheyareallpresentinforeignlan-
guageteachinganditcanhardlybeassumedthattheappearanceofanewwave
makesanypreviouswavedisappear.Thisoverlapmakesiteasiertodiscuss
alowerintensityofapreviouswavebutneveritscompletedisappearance.
