Abright10-year-oldboywholivesinavillageabout25kilometresfrom
Lublinwasaskedtogivehisopinionone-learningandrespondedwith
thefollowingstatement:“Itwasmostlyachallenge;notbecauseIdidn’t
knowwhattodo,butbecauseoffrequentpowercutsinmyareaandweak
Internetsignal.”Itappearedthateachtimetherewasastorm,aheavyrain-
fallorastrongerwindinthatarea,theelectricitywentout,sometimesfor
afewhours,andaschooldaywaslost.Asitisalsowidelyacknowledged,
theInternetsignalismuchweakerinmountainousareas,whichmakes
thee-learningexperiencequiteannoyingandfrequentlyfrustratingfortea-
chers,learnersandtheirparents.
AccordingtotheUNESCOdata(2020)takenfromSDG4(Sustainable
DevelopmentGoal4),about87%oflearnersintheworldexperienced
schoolclosuresduetothepandemic.Manyofthesechildren,especiallyte-
enagegirls,willneverreturntoschool.Tereisstillnodataonexactlyhow
manychildrenintheworldcouldnottakeadvantageofonlineeducation
becauseofpowercuts,lackofequipmentandweakornoInternetsignal.
Tis-asmentionedbefore-alsoappliestoabout17%ofPolishschoolchil-
dren,especiallyfromruralormountainousareas.
Tepandemicdestroyedtherhythmofeducationinthecountriesthat
decidedtocloseschools,causingacollapseofnormsandprinciplesofbe-
haviour.Teacherscouldexperiencelessonhackingonlineorevenreceive
instancesofhatespeech.Atthebeginningtherewashardlyanycontrol
overwhoactuallyparticipatedinthelessons-thesofwarewasnotyet
readytoprovideteacherswithtoolstocontrollessonattendanceoreli-
minateunwantedparticipants.Teachershadtorapidlyadjusttothenew
systemofeducationonlinewithinafewweeks,ifnotdays.Normally,such
changeswouldtakemonthsorevenyears.Tathastecausedanxietyand
frustration.Furthermore,foralongtimetherewasnodecisioninPoland
regardingtheprimaryschoolleavingexamination(“eight-gradeexam”)and
theMatriculationexamination(“Matura”).Boththedatesandtheformof
thesehigh-stakesexamshadnotbeenannouncedfortwomonths.Finally,
bothwerechanged,andtheMaturaexamwastakenonlyinthewrittenparts
inboth2020and2021-theoralpartswerecancelled.TeUnitedKingdom
hadsimilarproblems,cancellingtheGCSEexamsinboth2020and2021.
