Abstract
Objectives:ThearticleisaimedatstudyingthedifferentiationofthestrengthofstateidentityinselectedEuropean
countriesandattemptstoexplaintheobservedtendencies.
ResearchDesign&Methods:TheempiricalpartisbaseduponthreewavesoftheInternationalSocialSurveyProgramme
entitled4NationalIdentity’.
Findings:TheresultsshowthatstateidentitiesinWesternEuropeancountriesarewell-developed.Central/Eastern
EuropeansocietiesarecharacterisedbylowerlevelsofstateidentitythanWesternEuropeanones.Weattributethis
phenomenontolegaciesofthepast,especiallythetomanycenturiesofeconomicunderdevelopmentoftheregionthat
wasenhancedincreasedbycommunismandlowlevelsofsocialcapitalinEasternEuropeansocieties.
Contribution:ThisstudylinksthestateidentityofcitizensofEuropeancountrieswiththeirlivingconditionsandpast
legacies.

Introduction
Therearegroupidentities.Amongthem
nationalidentitiesareparticularlystrongandex-
pansionary.NationalidentitywasborninEurope
asaneffectofindustrialandnationalrevolutions
andhaseversincebeenverystronglybound
togetherwithcivicidentity(Habermas,1994).
Asaconsequencecitizenshiphasacquired
adoublestatus.Itindicatesthelegalstatusofan

torecognisetheprimacyoftheculturalfactor,

byhisorherrelationtothestate,asanapparatus
ofpower,thantothenationasamoralcommunity’
(Delanty,1995,p.161).Thisissueisanempirical
onewhichweraiseinafurtherpartofthisarticle.
