inconnectionwithsocialandlifestylechanges
Introduction:Intheyears1996-2006manyCentralandEasternEuropeancountriesunderwentsys-
temreforms.TheirhighintensityinPolandmadethePolishsocietyfaceauniqueeconomic,social
andbiologicalexperiment.Thestudyofchangesinbiologicalandfunctionalcharacteristicsinrapidly
changingenvironmentalconditionsenablestoobservehowchangesinthesocialenvironmentinflu-
encethebiologicalstatusofparticularsocialgroupsandindicatesthefactorsresponsibleforsocial
inequalities.
Theaim:Themainobjectiveofthepresentworkwastoevaluatetheimpactofselectedsocialfactors
andfemalelifestylesonthechangesinwomen3sbiologicalandfunctionalcharacteristicsintheyears
1986-2006.Theotherobjectivesofthestudyincluded:1.analysesofthechangesinselectedlifestyle
andmentalwell-beingaspectsofwomeninthegivenperiod,2.analysesoftheoccurrenceofsecular
trendsinselectedbiomedicalindicators,3.identificationofsocialgroupswhosebiologicalandfunc-
tionalconditionschangedtothegreatestextentintheperiodconsidered,4.assessmentofthestrength
anddirectionoftheinfluenceofselectedsocio-economicandlifestylefactorsonwomen3sbiological
conditionandphysicalfitnessintheyears1986-2006,5.riskassessmentoftheoccurrenceofmajor
civilizationhealththreatsinwomenintheyears1986-2006.
Materialandmethods:Anthropometricdata,measuresofbiologicalcondition,informationonphysi-
calfitnessandlifestyleaswellassocialdataof5,042womenaged40-50yearsold,healthyandpro-
fessionallyactiveresidentsofWroclaw,wereanalysed.Duringthe1986-2006period,fourbirthco-
hortsofwomenwereexaminedin1986,1991,1996and2006.Anthropologicalcharacteristics,physi-
calfitness,conditionoftherespiratoryandcirculatorysystems,lipids,carbohydratesandbloodhae-
matologicalparameterswereassessed.Thesocio-economicinformation,selectedelementsoflifestyle
andpsychophysicalconditionoftheexaminedwomenwereevaluatedbymeansofaquestionnaire.
Results:Duringthestudyperiodtherewereobservedfavourabletrendsinbodystructurechanges.
Blood,respiratorystatus,biochemicalandhaematologicalparametersandwomen'sphysicalfitness
improved.Despitethepositiveseculartrendsofalmostallbiomedicalindicators,theirsignificant
collapsewasobservedin1991.Therewerefoundregularsocialgradientsofalmostallmeasuresof
biologicalconditionandfunctionalstate.Thesocialdistanceforcertainmeasuresofbiologicalstatus
decreasedduringthestudyperiod.Itresultedfrombetterseculartrendsinlesseducatedwomen.The
mainsocio-economicfactorthatinfluencedthebiologicalstatusofthesurveyedwomenwastheir
levelofeducation.Themostimportantlifestylefactorswerecigarettesmokingandphysicalinactivity.
Conclusions:Healthimplicationsoftheintensepolitical,economicandsocialchangesintheperiod
1986-2006indicateimprovementinthebiologicalconditionandfunctionalstatusofprofessionally
activewomeninthefifthdecadeoftheirlife.Theobtainedcomprehensiveinformationonthekey
factorsofwomen3sbiologicalcondition,apartfromindividualmeaning,shouldhaveasignificant
impactonthenationalhealthpolicyandconstructionofappropriateeducationalmodelspromoting
healthylifestyle.Newpreventativeprogrammesshouldtakeintoconsiderationbothsensitivityand
variedadaptabilityofparticularsocialgroupstothechangesinenvironmentalconditions.Itmaybeof
significantcognitiveandpracticalimportanceintheexpandingEuropeanenvironment.
