butweredisappointedbyanti-Semitismintheirnon-Jewishenvironment,

andhopedtofindanewidentityinnationalJudaism.50Ontheotherhand,

itattractedyoungboyslikeThonwhostudiedinhederandYeshivaand

whoknewtheJewishtraditionandreligionperfectly,butwereautodidacts

inotherfieldsofknowledge,secularstudies,andsciences,whichwerefor

themafascinatingsphere.ThesecularstudiesinMikraKodeshwerethe

perfecttransitiontoGermangymnasiumforsuchambitiousyoungJews.

ElaBauerclaimsthatMikraKodeshwasthefirststageintheintellectual

andpublicpathofitsmembersandtheframeinwhichyoungpeoplefrom

differentbackgroundbecametheJewishintelligentsiainGalicia.51
