Introduction
OnOctober20,1975,MichałBudny,DirectoroftheJózefPiłsudskiInstitute
inNewYorkCity,receivedaletterfromSisterMaryRoseCSFN,theProvincial
SuperioroftheCongregationoftheSistersoftheHolyFamilyofNazarethin
theUnitedStates.MotherSuperiorapologizedforthedelayinrespondingand
reportedthattheinternalsearchforthearchivalmaterialsofMarianChodacki,
formerPlenipotentiaryMinisteroftheRepublicofPolandattheConsulate
GeneralinNewYork,didnotyieldanyresults.Meanwhile,accordingto
Chodacki)swill,theyweretobetransferredtotheInstitute.SistersElectaand
Rufinia,whobothknewthecase,havelongsincepassedaway.Teydidnot
passontheirknowledgetoanyoneelse.TeMotherSuperioraskedformore
information,whichcouldhelppinpointwherethecollectionmightbe.
TiswasareplytoBudny)sownletterdatedSeptember9,1975sentaferhe
hadreceivedasealedenvelope,onwhichChodackiwrotethatincaseofhis
death-hediedonJune26-thecontentsweretobedeliveredtotheincumbent
PresidentoftheInstituteoroneofitsdeputies.Insidetherewasamysterious
pieceofinformationthatwasacluetothesearchfordocuments:

successoristobeinformedaboutthematter.Theagreementisalsotobemade
knowntoeachfollowingAssistantMotherSuperior.
PeopleworkingattheInstituteknewthatthecaseconcernedakindofwill
drawnupbyChodackionDecember16,1949.Intheeventofhisdeath,he
willedthearchivestotheInstitute,whichhehidinMarch1945forfearthat
theymightfallintothehandsofthecommunists.AlthoughtheProvisional
GovernmentofNationalUnity[Pol.:TymczasowyRządJednościNarodowej]
hadnotyetbeenformed,thecourseofevents,especiallytheYaltaConference
ofFebruary1945,clearlyshowedthattheriskofPoland)sLondonGovernment
losingcontroloveritsresourcesandinstitutionswasgrowingincrementally
eachday.Tesecollectionsincluded:
