Tearchivescouldonlybepickedupbyapersonwhopresentedan
acknowledgementofreceipt(anannextothewill),gaveaverbalpassword
(handedoverinsealedenvelopestotwoindividualswithinstructionstosend
themtotheDirector,thePresidentorVice-PresidentofthePiłsudskiInstitute)
andknewtheaddressatwhichthedocumentswerebeingstored.Itwasthe
contentsoftwofurtherenvelopes,handedovertoothertrustedpersons.It
wasoneoftheseenvelopesthatwenttoDirectorBudny.
Suchextraordinaryprecautionsweredictatedbyseveralconsiderations.
Firstly,MarianChodackihadtherighttofearforhislife.InJuly1947,
amysteriousarticlewaspublishedinthePolishpressunderthetitle:“Nie
odzyskawszyprzytomności”[Eng.:Nothavingregainedconsciousness],later
reprintedalsobyPolishdiasporapresstitles.Chodackitreateditasawarning
andanelementofthedisinformationcampaignaimedathim.Pressservices
overseasfocusedmainlyonexpressingoutrageandironyaboutthepoor
qualityofcommunistpropaganda.However,itwascertainlynotpleasant
forChodackihimselfandhiswifetoreadthathewasbeatentodeathby
hissuspiciousbusinesspartnersandthatMrs.HalinaChodacka)srestaurant
OgniskoPolskie[Eng.:TePolishHearth]isinfactarun-of-the-millgreasy
spoon.Secondly,thematerialshiddenbyChodacki,especiallytheConsulate
archivesandintelligencedocuments,wereintensivelybeingsoughtbythe
“new”diplomatsoftheProvisionalGovernmentofNationalUnity(and
subsequentgovernments,alreadydominatedbythecommunists)afertheloss
ofrecognitionoftheLondon-basedPolishGovernmentinExile.Interestingly,
thefirstambassadorofthePeople)sRepublicofPolandparticularlyinterested
inthesedocumentswasOskarLange,aprofessorofeconomics,whosename
stillhangsonthewallsofuniversityandlecturehallsinPolandandwhose
