AndrzejLasotawasborninWarsawonJanuary11th1932.Atthebegin-
ningofWorldWarIIhisfamilywasevacuatedtotheEastpartofPolandand
theretheyfellunderSovietoccupation.Fortunately,theywereabletoescape
backtoWarsawwheretheystayeduntiltheWarsawUprisingof1944.War-
sawwasdestroyedandhisfamilymovedfirsttoKrakówandnexttoPoznań.
HereAndrzejLasotagraduatedfromsecondaryschoolin1951andthenbegan
tostudyphysicsattheJagiellonianUniversityofKraków.Undertheinflu-
enceofProfessorTadeuszWażewskihechangedhismajortomathematics.In
1955AndrzejLasotadefendedhisMScthesisattheJagiellonianUniversity
andthenin1960hisPhDthesisattheMathematicalInstituteofthePolish
AcademyofSciences.In1964heobtainedthedegreeofhabilitateddoctorat
theJagiellonianUniversity.HegotthestatetitlesofProfessorextraordinary
in1972andProfessorordinaryin1979.
Hebeganhisacademiccareerstillbeingastudentin1953attheJagiel-
lonianUniversityandworkedtheretill1975.HewastheDeanoftheFac-
ultyin1972–1975.FollowingthathebecameaprofessoratSilesianUni-
versityinKatowicefrom1975tillhisdeathin2006withashortbreakin
1986–1988whenheworkedattheM.CurieSkłodowskaUniversityinLublin.
Healsohadpart-timepositionsatJagiellonianUniversity1975–2005,and
theInstituteofMathematicsofthePolishAcademyofSciences1956–1962,
1995–2006.Hewasthesupervisorof21PhDstudents.ProfessorLasotahad
