reprintedintheNewYork’sNowyDziennik.Sheurgedeverybodyconcernedtosave
sourceandiconographicmaterialsrelatedtoeducationalexperienceandacademic
activitiesofPolishsoldier-studentsoftheIICorpsatItalianacademiesaftertheend
oftheSecondWorldWar.Theappealwasrelatedtooverthirteenhundredofformer
soldiersoftheIICorpswhoweredelegatedbyGeneralAnderstostudyatacademic
centresofRome,Turin,MilanandBologna.ThisiswherethePolesstudiedlaw,
economy,medicine,sciences,humanities,architectureand,ofinteresttous,finearts.
Lanckorońska’sinitiativeatthattimewasevenmorevaluableduetothefactthat
agroupofformersoldier-students,howeverdispersedoverthewholeworld,wasstill
aliveandcouldcontributetothecollectingoftestimonies,memories,photographs
anddocuments,whichpreviouslyweretobefoundneitheramongthecollectionsof
LondonnorRomanarchives.Lanckorońskaworkedasacademicteacherinthestruc-
turesofthePolishIICorpsintheyears1945-1948.Asaresultofherinvolvement,
variousdocumentscametolight,includingmanuscriptsandnotesrelatedtoMarian
Bohusz-Szyszko’sSchoolofPainting,writtenbyitsformerstudent,adistinguished
Polishstained-glassartistRyszardDemel44,currentlylivinginPadua.Heistheauthor
ofthefirsttext(containing,however,severalfactographicgaps)publishedin1993
onPolishstudentsattheRomanAkademiadiBelleArtiintheyears1945-1946and
theirlivesinGreatBritainafter1946entitledOpolskichżołnierzachartystachistuden-
tachsztukpięknychwItaliiiAnglii45.ThistextwasalsoincludedinNowicki’sstudy
mentionedabove,publishedin1996.Whileeditingthetext,Demelcouldnotuse
thearchivemateriallocatedattheAcademyofFineArtsinRome.Thearchivesthere,
inaccessibleatthattime,containinformationonmostofPolishstudentswhostarted
theirstudiesinRomanLiceoArtisticoandAcademiadiBelleArtiaftertheBattleof
MonteCassinoandliberationofBologna.Itwasin2011and2012whenImanaged
toaccessthedocumentsfromtheRomanarchivesandusethemforthepresentstudy.
Previously,inthemid-1980s,theworksofPolishsoldier-artistsandprisoners-
-of-warintheinternmentcamps,butmostofallontheterritoriesofpre-warGer-
many,liedintheareaofinterestofJaninaJaworska.Overthirtyfiveyearsago,inher
publicationentitledPolskasztukawalcząca1939-194546,Jaworskaincludedaone-
-pagelongsubsectionwithaheadingŚrodkowyiBliskiWschód.Afryka(Nearand
MiddleEast.Africa)whichcanbeviewedasmerepreliminaryreferencetotheexist-
ingphenomenonoftheartisticactivitiesofPolishvisualartistsamongtheranksof
