emiesinBeirut,RomeandLondon,wheretheystudiedandgainedtheirfirstartistic
experience.Theirencounterwithnewcultures,newnon-Europeanart,andalsonew
coloursandlight(bothintheNearandMiddleEastandontheApenninePeninsula)
aftertheyhadlefttheKinhumanland”oftheSovietUnion,openedtothemunexpected
paintingpossibilities.Theyweresoontoresultinaseriesofinterestingdevelopments
andartisticcareers.Itisworthnotingatthispointthatthereisstilltheissue,beyondthe
scopeofthepresentstudy,ofpressillustrationsandgraphicworksinthepublicationsof
theIICorps.ThemostrecentstudybyOskarStanislawCzernikisdevotedtothepress
andpublicationsbroughtoutthankstotheeffortsofPolishIndependentCarpathian
RifleBrigadeintheyears1940-1942andthepublishingactivitiesofthePolishArmed
ForcesintheEastandoftheIICorps.Thankstothiswork,whichforthefirsttimeana-
lyzesthisphenomenonfromtheperspectiveofitsgeographicalcontent,theillustrative
materialinthepressandbooksshouldbecomethesubjectofcomprehensiveresearch
andevaluationinthefuture49.
Theresultsofmyresearchpresentedinthispublicationwhicharebasedon
archivalresearchcarriedout,apartfromPoland,inRome,LondonandBeirutsig-
nificantlycontributetothebodyofknowledgeinthisarea.Theyshednewlightonto
theachievementsofPolishartistsgroupedaroundGeneralAndersinboththefieldof
theirartisticcreativityandequallyimportantactivitieswithregardtoorganizational,
exhibitionandeducationalmatters.Thetimeframefortheaboveconcernsincludes
theperiodofthearmy’sstayintheNearandMiddleEastandlikewiseoftheIICorps’
activitiesontheApenninePeninsulabetween1943and1946,andlaterinGreat
Britainuntil1949.
ThebasicfactsconcerningtheBeirutAcademyofFineArtsandthePolishSchool
ofPaintingandDrawingintheyears1945-1949(eventhoughbasedonmemories
whichhadtobeverified)weretobefoundinthearticlewrittenbyStanisławFrenkiel
andpublishedmorethantwentyyearsagoinLondonentitledKMalarzewBejrucie”50.
