tioncampsandNaziprisonsintheyears1939-1945.Thescholarconcentratedonthe
drawings,paintingsandgraphicworks(mostlywatercoloursandrareoilpaintings)
createdthere,butalsoonsculpturesandhandicraftobjects,explainingatthesame
timethathertextdidnotattempttopresentacomprehensivestudyofPolishartcre-
atedinprisonsandconcentrationcamps.Theobjectsstillwaitingtobeanalysedin-
cludethoseproducedinsimilarimprisonmentconditionsinthegulaglabourcamps
ontheterritoryoftheSovietUnion,handicraftworksuchaschurchornamentsand
ordinaryobjects,whichcannotbeevaluatedaccordingtothesamecriteriaasthose
usedtodescribeworksofart.Inviewoftheemergenceofnewopportunities(de-
spiteconsiderabledifficulties)fornewformsofcooperationbetweenPolishandRus-
sianarthistorians,forinstancewithintheprogramofPolishInstituteofWorldArt
Studies,theabovementionedworkscouldbecomethesubjectofaseparatestudy48.
Afreshlookatsuchworkcouldbepossibleafterconductingathoroughresearchon
theterritoryofRussiaandformerSovietrepublics.
Thankstoarchiveresearchandconsolidationofdocumentsandworksofart,
hithertoscatteredaroundEuropeandbeyond,byPolishinstitutions(suchasthe
EmigrationArchivesinToruń),researchershavenowaccesstomoresourcesandmore
materialstostudy.Thenewlyretrievedevidenceshedsnewlightontonumerousis-
suesinthefieldofPolishartisticculture,including,ofthegreatestinteresttous,the
stateofPolishartduringthemosttragicperiodoftheSecondWorldWar,theyearsof
utterdispersalandenormityofdestruction.Fortunatelyforthispublicationthough,
thepresentauthorwasabletoexploresomearchivalsourcesandalsoworksofartun-
knownandunavailablebefore1989duringhismorethantwodecade-longcontinu-
ousresearchonthewarandpost-warPolishartisticlifeonemigration.
Thepaintings,drawingsandsculpturesproducedbysoldier-artistsoftheIICorps
wereessentiallytheresultoftheircreativeinventiveness,whichwasnotrestrainedbythe
warrealityorideologicalpremises.Thatiswhytheydeservetobeevaluatednotfrom
theperspectiveofmartyrdom,war,sufferingandwarpropaganda,butpreciselyfrom
theperspectiveoftheirartisticvalue.Thethemeofwarwaspresenttoaverylimited
degreeintheworksofPolishartistswhofoundthemselvesamongtheranksofPolish
ArmedForcesintheEastandofthePolishIICorps,representingtheartisticenviron-
mentsofWarsaw,Vilnius,LvivorKatowice.Inthesamevein,theyoungerartadepts,
i.e.soldier-studentswhohadnotmanagedtostartartisticeducationinPolandbefore
September1939werenotreallypreoccupiedwiththethemeofwar.Onthecontrary,
