Introduction:RoyalPowerReconsidered
rulersweredepictedinhistoricalsources.Nordicrulersareconsequentlystyled
askingsdespitethelackoftheriteofblessingandcoronation.Thiscouldbe
explainedasresultingfromtheadherencetotheirlocal,rootedinpagantimes,
royaltradition,whichdevelopedindependentlyfromtheCarolingiansystemof
hierarchy,thatinfluencedtherepresentationoftherulershipinCentralEurope.
Theseminarwhichlaybehindthecreationofthepresentvolumewasmade
possibleduetoafruitfulandongoingcooperationbetweentheUniversityof
SilesiainKatowiceandseveralpartnerinstitutionsinScandinavia,mainlythe
UniversityofIceland,theUniversityofOslo,andtheUniversityCollegeof
South-EasternNorway.Thecooperation,includingtheexchangeofboththe
academicstaffandthestudents,wasfinancedbytheEEAgrantsandprovided
numerous,bothprofessionalandpersonal,benefitsandopportunitiesforallthe
partiesinvolved.Thevolumeweherebypresentis,ontheonehand,oneof
theresultsofthiscooperation,ontheother,itisasignificantcommitmentand
assurancetomaintainandexpandtheprofessionalrelationshipsinthefuture,
manyofwhich,wearehappytosay,havealreadyalsotransformedintolast-
ingfriendships.
Severalpeoplecontributedtomakingthecontactsbetweenthescholarsin
thiscollectionpossible,and,wedaresay,tothesuccessofthecollaboration
whichensuedfromthem.Amongthesepeople,wewouldliketodistinguish
andhonourProfessorAsdisEgilsdóttirfromtheUniversityofIceland,towhom
wewishtodedicatethisvolumeinrecognitionofherfriendshipandasatoken
ofourgratitude.Herinvaluableadviceandexpertise,herpositiveapproach,
supportandcommitmenthavebeenandstillarecrucialfortheestablishment
andforfurtherdevelopmentofthecooperationthatbroughttheauthorsofthis
volumetogether.
