aspirationsthathepropoundedanddevelopedinLondonPolishcirclesand
democraticorganisations,ofwhichhewasacommittedandprominentmember
fromearly1836.HewasoneofaverylimitednumberofPolishémigréswho
penetratedBritishsocietyinLondon,andhealsoformedtieswiththeGerman,
FrenchandItalianpoliticalrefugeeswhoincreasinglyflockedtotheBritish
capital.HisfirstBritishcontactswerewiththeMaryleboneRadicals,including
laterChartistactivistslikeHenryVincent.Hissubsequentcommitmentto
Chartismwasacommitmenttointernationalism,butlikeotherexiles,helived-
inawaythatBritisheducatedmiddleclasssympathiserswereonthewhole
unabletodo-ontermsofintimacywithworkingclassLondonersandwas
abletosharetheirspecificgoals.

alatererathanhisown,andhisPolishcontemporarieswereoftenbitterly
offended,particularlybyhisconsistentlyhostileattitudetoorganisedreligion,
forhewasarationalistandfreethinker.

unreservedlywelcomedbyhisBritishworkingclassassociatesandbymany
others,althoughthelimitsoftolerancearefrequentlyexposedbyestablishment
figuresfromLordJohnRusselltoTimesjournalists.ButIthinkwemustalso
acceptthatatthesametime,asaforeigner,hewasnottakenentirelyseriously-
eitherbytheChartistsorbyofficialsofthestate.
