thebarn,butthechaffhewillburnupwithunquenchablefire.”
3.13ThenJesuscamefromGalileetotheJordan[i.e.,theJordanRiver]
toJohn,tobebaptizedbyhim.3.14ButJohnwouldhavehinderedhim,
saying,“Ineedtobebaptizedbyyou,andyoucometome?”
3.15ButJesus,answering,saidtohim,“Allowitnow,forthisisthe
fittingwayforustofulfillallrighteousness.”Thenheallowedhim.3.16
Jesus,whenhewasbaptized,wentupdirectlyfromthewater:and
behold,theheavenswereopenedtohim.HesawtheSpiritofGod
descendingasadove,andcomingonhim.3.17Behold,avoiceout
oftheheavenssaid,“ThisismybelovedSon,withwhomIamwell
pleased.”

4.1ThenJesuswasledupbytheSpiritintothewilderness
tobetemptedbythedevil.4.2Whenhehadfastedfortydaysandforty
nights,hewashungryafterward.4.3Thetemptercameandsaidtohim,
“IfyouaretheSonofGod,commandthatthesestonesbecomebread.”
4.4Butheanswered,“Itiswritten,‘Manshallnotlivebybreadalone,
butbyeverywordthatproceedsoutofthemouthofGod.’”
4.5Thenthedeviltookhimintotheholycity.Hesethimonthe
pinnacleofthetemple,4.6andsaidtohim,“IfyouaretheSonofGod,
throwyourselfdown,foritiswritten,‘Hewillputhisangelsincharge
ofyou.’and,
‘Ontheirhandstheywillbearyouup,
sothatyoudon’tdashyourfootagainstastone.’”
4.7Jesussaidtohim,“Again,itiswritten,‘YoushallnottesttheLord,
yourGod.’”
4.8Again,thedeviltookhimtoanexceedinglyhighmountain,and
showedhimallthekingdomsoftheworld,andtheirglory.4.9Hesaid
tohim,“Iwillgiveyouallofthesethings,ifyouwillfalldownand
worshipme.”
