Theanalysisofculturalfactorsandtheirinfluenceonbusinessactivitycanbe

adifficulttaskduetothefactthattheconceptofcultureisverybroadandcan

beinterpretedinavarietyofways.1Thisisconfirmedbytheappearanceofover

150definitionsofcultureinthe20thcenturyalone.Thusitdoesnotcomeas

asurprisethatR.Williamsdefinedcultureasoneofthetwoorthreemostdifficult

wordsinEnglish.R.Borofskycomparesthesearchforthedefinitionofcultureto

akintotryingtocagethewind(citedafter[Throsby2010,p.18]),whileJ.G.Herder

wrotethatthereisnothingmoreindefinitethanthewordlculture’[Herder1962,

p.4].Thisisthereasonwhysomeresearchersininterculturalcommunicationin

generalavoiddefiningthisdifficultandcomplexnotion[Mikułowski-Pomorski

1999,p.35].

Thevarietyofapproachesandinterpretationsisnotlimitedonlytoproblems

relatedtodefiningtheconceptofculture.Duringthelastfewdecadesmany

typologiesofculturehavebeencreatedandareusedintheanalysisofbusiness

operations.Theystressvariouselementswhichallowfordifferentiating

particulartypesofcultures,andthereforethisareaalsorepresentsdiversityof

viewsandinterpretations.

Fromtheviewpointofbusinessactivitiesitisimportantthatamongthe

elementsofculturetherearenotonlymaterialproductsbutalsoorganizations

andsocietalinstitutions,principlesofhumancoexistence,modesofconduct,

modelsofbehavingandcriteriaofevaluatingbehaviour.Althoughinmany

regionsoftheworldthereisatendencytohighlightcommonrootsandcultural

heritage,significantculturaldifferencesbetweencountriesstillremain.This

applieseventosuchareasascountriesintheEuropeanUnionwhichdemonstrate

thestandardizationofsocio-culturalattitudes.Moreover,insomecountriesthere
