Cultureasanelementofacompany’sinternational
environment
Theongoingprocessesofinternationalizationandglobalizationstrengthen
thestrategicimportanceoftheinternationalenvironmentinwhichcompanies
operate,especiallybecauseduringrecentdecadesitsgrowingvolatilitymeans
thatitisbecomingincreasinglylessbusiness-friendly.
Alltheeconomicentitiesoperateinacertainenvironmentandtherefore
havetoincludeintheirbusinessdecisionstheconsiderationsrelatedtoits
characteristics.Alreadybackinthe1970smanyauthors(e.g.H.I.Ansoff,
F.R.Root)begantodrawattentiontothesignificantinfluenceoftheinternational
environmentoncompanyactivity.
Themaincharacteristicsofthebusinessenvironmentareitsvolatility
andcomplexity.Thesefeatureswerecalledlturbulences’byH.I.Ansoff,who
characterisedthembytheincreasednoveltyofchange,increasedintensityof
theenvironmentalchange,increasedpaceofchangesintheenvironmentand
itsgrowingcomplexity[Ansoff1985,p.58].Thismeansthatchangesoccurin
theenvironmentwithgrowingspeed,becomemorecomprehensiveandatthe
sametimemoredifficulttoforesee.Ontheotherhand,theenvironmentitself
increasinglyimpactsonthefunctioningofcompanies,atthesametimebecoming
lessfriendly.Theconfirmationofthechangesoccurringintheinternational
environment,whichareundesirablefromtheviewpointofbusinessactivity,can
befoundintherecentlypopulartheoryoflblackswans’.Itpointsoutagrowing
frequencyofoccurrenceofunknownandsurprisingphenomenawhichhave
notbeentakenintoconsiderationwhenplanningoperationsinforeignmarkets.
Theymayvaryintheircharacterbutingeneralconstituteobstaclesinachieving
theaimstargetedbycompanies[Taleb2007].
Intheliteraturewecanalsocomeacrossthedivisionofchangesoccurring
intheenvironmentintotransformationsofacontinuousandnon-continuous
nature[Duliniec2009,p.49].Theformerconstituteaseriesofsmall,permanent
changes(economic,technological,social)whichindividuallydonothave
asignificantinfluenceontheconditionsofconductingbusinessoperationson
foreignmarkets.However,thelatter,non-continuousones,occursporadically
andaredecidedlymorenoticeablefromthepointofviewofcompany
functioning.Theymaybringtheneedforfastandfar-reachingchangesin
theestablishedstrategyofactivities.Amongsuchphenomenawecanlistthe
politicalandeconomictransformationinthecountriesofCentralandEastern
Europebetweenthe1980sand1990s,aswellastheAsianeconomiccrisisatthe
endofthe1990s.
