Forsomepurposes,theMesaVerderegionisdividedintosmallerpartsorsub-re-
gions.Oneoftheproposeddivisionsis,fromeasttowest:Totah,MesaVerdeProper,
McElmo-Monument,WestMesaVerde,andLowerSanJuan(Glowacki2006:6–7).In
thisscheme,thecentralMesaVerde,theregiononwhichthisbookfocuses,comprises
threesub-regions:MesaVerdeProper,McElmo-Monument,andWestMesaVerde.
ThecentralMesaVerderegionwasoriginallydefinedastheareabetweenMesa
VerdeNationalParkinsouthwesternColoradoandtheUtah-Coloradoborder(Lipe
1995a:143),butthisdefinitionwasrecentlyextendedtoincludetheareafromthe
MancosRiverandMesaVerdeNationalParkinColoradotoCottonwoodWashinsouth-
easternUtah(Varien2000:6–7,Fig.2).Inotherwords,thecentralMesaVerderegionis
locatedintheareaofthenortherntributariesthatdrainintothemiddlepartoftheSan
JuanRiverandisboundedbytheMancosRiverontheeastandbyCottonwoodWashon
thewest.ThetotalareaofthecentralMesaVerderegionisapproximately8742km²
(Glowacki2006:17–18).
