ontheEUinstitutionsanddemocracy(Zielonka2007;Sjursen2006)andontheCEE
societies(GóraandMach2010).Themain,overarchingquestionforvariousresearch
initiativesishowthecountriesandtheirsocietiesfollowthepathofmodernisation
andEuropeanisationwithoutthepowerfulmechanismofconditionality.Thisisalso
oneofthemainquestionswhichunderscoresthisvolume.Thisbriefoverviewofthe
literatureonEuropeanisationsetsitsgeneraltheoreticalframework.Thisisfurther
complementedbythecommentarieswrittentoeachpartofthebookandillustrated
bythecasestudiesofferedbythearticlescontributingtothevolume.
Presentationofthebook
ThisbookisaddressedtothoseinterestedinCentralandEasternEurope.Ithastwo
mainaims.Ontheonehand,itpresentstherecentalterationsintheregionresulting
fromtheprocessesofEuropeanintegration.Inotherwords,itoffersanaccountofthe
processofEuropeanisationintheregionoccurringaftertheaccessionandgoingbe-
yondconditionalitymechanisms.Ontheotherhand,thecollectionattemptstooffer
reflectionandcontributetothediscussiononhowthechangestakingplaceinCEE
influencetheoretisationonEuropeanisationaconceptinitiallyconstructedinorder
totacklethechangestakingplaceinresponsetotheprocessesofEuropeanintegra-
tionintheoldmemberstates.
Mostofthetextsincludedinthisvolumewerealreadypublishedinvariousjour-
nalsinrecentyears,afterenlargement,1withtheexceptionoforiginalarticlesby
NicoleGallinaandMartinDangerfield,aswellasthecontributionswrittenbyChris-
topherLord,ZdzisławMach,Hans-JörgTrenzandMagdalenaGóra,servingascom-
mentariestoeachpartofthebook.Attemptingtobringinthevoicesfromthe"core”
andthe"periphery”ofsocialsciences,thereprintedarticleswereselectedfromboth
journalspublishedinCentralandEasternEurope,oftenwithlimitedcirculation,as
wellasthosemorerecognisableintheglobalnetworkofscholarsandresearchers.
ThemajorkeyforselectionwastochoosearticlesthatlookattheCEEregionand
highlightsignificantchangesnotalwaysonlypositiveinducedbytheEuropean
integration.
Thebookisdividedintofourparts,eachconcentratingonanareawherechanges
seemtobemostprofoundandmostinterestingfromthepointofviewoftheorising
ontheimpactofEuropeanintegrationprocesses,i.e.democraticconsolidationinthe
region,collectiveidentityconstruction,functioningofcivilsocietyandstudieson
foreignpolicyandinternationalrelations.
