teachersandstudentsofEnglish,aswellasanyoneinterestedininterculturalcom-

petenceandwaysofdevelopingit,inparticularreadersinterestedintheUkrainian

TheprojectaimsatimprovingcommunicativecompetenceinEnglishasan

internationallanguageandraisinginterculturalawarenessamongUkrainianand

PolishstudentsofEnglish.OurgoalistoenablestudentsofEnglishinourcountries,

thepopulationofwhichhasgreatlyexpandedsinceEnglishhasbeenrecognizedby

educationalauthoritiesasaEuropeanlinguafranca,tofamiliarizethemselveswith

eachother,withsomeaspectsofourcultures,aswellaswithsomecontemporary

socialproblemsinourcountries.

Wealsoexpectthatourprojectandthisvolumeasitsoutcomewouldbeof

interesttoallthosereadersinothercountrieswhobecauseoftheirorigin,ﬁeld

ofstudiesoracquiredtastewouldliketolearnmoreaboutUkrainianandPolish

cultures.Whatmaybeinterestingtothoseintendedreadersincountriesotherthan

PolandandUkrainearedifferentapproachestoaspectsofcultureinUkraineand

inPoland.

TheprojectstartedoutofPolishinitiativein2009andwasreadilytakenup

bytheUkrainianpartners.StaffmembersoftheEnglishPhilologyDepartment

ofVSPNUagreedtowriteandcompileacollectionoftextsinEnglishwith

accompanyinginterculturaltasks.SincestaffmembersoftheEnglishPhilology

DepartmentofJUwerelesswillingtowriteandselecttexts,agroupofJagiellonian

Universitygraduatestudentswereencouragedtoconductinterculturalprojectsin

cooperationwithMAstudentsfromtheEnglishPhilologyDepartmentofVSPNU.

DICEisaninnovativeprojectinatleasttwoways.First,itisanintercultural

PolishandUkrainianprojectbutthelanguageitiswritteninisEnglish.Webelieve

thatthemediumofEnglishasalanguageofinternationalcommunicationwillmake

ourstudentsperceivetheirownandtheirneighbours'culturesinanintercultural

perspectiveand,asaresult,willcontributetoraisingtheirinterculturalawareness

andtolerance.Allofus,exceptsomeofourinternationalstudents,areusersof
