Likeanydiscourse,thediscourseofmarketingcommunicationislimitedby
bothexternalconditionsandspecificsocialrelationshipsinaparticularsociety
aswellasbyadeliberatelypreferred/supportedformationofanimageofthe
worldandoneself(atbothpersonalandinstitutionallevels).Inbothcases
assumptionswithwhichsocietyandindividualsuwork”duringtextcreation
enterintothisrelationship(Fairclough,2003:59).Theanalyst’sjobisthen
torevealtheseassumptionsonwhichtheindividuallinguisticstylisations
arebasedaswellastodisclosetheinfluenceofsubsequentcommunication
behaviouronaparticularsocialpractice,societyandindividual.
Inthepresentresearchweapplytheprinciplesofinstitutionaldiscourse,
i.e.adiscoursepresupposingacertainfunctioningofmutualrelationsin
whichthesymmetryorasymmetryofsuchrelations,thedefinitionofthe
contradictionofuus”anduthem”representsthebasicdifferentiation.Itisquite
obviousthatcorporatewebsitesrepresentthesocietyandshapesofentities
inaspecificwaydefinedbythesystemofcontemporarysocietywhile,on
theotherhand,theycanbasetheirdiscourseontheirdetachmentfromsuch
shapeaswellasondetachmentfromnormallypresumedsocialroles.During
thewebsiteimplementationseveralfactorsareputintheforefront:company
intentionswhichcanformallydenytheinstitutionalnatureofthediscourse;
theacceptedvaluesofthecompanyandassociatedcertain/fixedmeanings
(forinstance,proposalsbymanyprivatecompaniesaimedatteenagersor
othertargetaudiences).
Theaimofwebsitetextanalysisis,thus,toexploretheirspecificcontent;the
linguisticmeansofexpressionbasedonsocialcontextwhichbothconstruct
acertainideaofthecompaniesabouttheirpositioninsocietyandinthe
market,revealtheattitudetoreadersofthesetextsandinvestigateashared
contextandcommonexperience.Itisnecessarytofollowthestrategiesand
choiceofmeansofcommunicationwhichcompaniesandinstitutionschoose
toachievetheprimarygoalofmarketingcommunication,whichisnotonlyto
inform,butalsotopersuade,sellgoods,servicesorideas.
