Summary:Thearticlediscussestheissueofthehistoricaldevelopmentofwritinginstrumentsin
thecontextofusingwoodrawmaterialsintheirproduction.Itisaproblemrelatedtotheagencyof
objectsaspartnersofhumanactivitiesincultureunderstoodinthebroadsense.Thevarioususesof
writing,includingGlagoliticandCyrillic,weredependentontheinstrumentsandmaterialsusedfor
thispurpose.Theirdiversitywasduetotheavailabilityofrawmaterialsatagiventimeandplace,
whichmeantthatwoodenboardscoveredwithwax,canepensandpapyruscardshavechangedin
theirusefulnessoverthecenturies.Thisreflectedthecivilizationchangesthatweretakingplace
throughliteraltechnology,anexampleofwhichwasthereplacementofpapyrusintheearlyMiddle
Ageswithparchment,andcanepenswithutensilsmadefrombirdailerons.TheseissuesinSlavic
studiesarestillpoorlyrecognizedandrequirefurtherinvestigation.
