Whenconservationwasonlyjustformingasaseparatediscipline
ofscholarship,researchersstudyingthecomplexmaterialandsocial
structureofcitiesnoticedtheneedtotransfertheirinterestfrom
individualfeatures–historicmonumentstowholecomplexes,tocities
asawholeand,finally,tothelandscape.Already,attheturnofthe
twentiethcentury,researchrevealedtheusefulnessoftheconservation
pointofviewinthewholecomplexityofsocio-culturalandeconomic
conditionsofthetransformationprocessofurbanstructure.Inthe
caseofhistorictownsandcities,italsoinducedaconstantsearchfor
conservationmethodsappropriatetotheindividual,specificcharacter
ofEuropeancities,andtotheconditionsinwhichconservationhad
tofunction.
Individualhistoricmonumentswerealwaysinaprivileged
situationinrelationtothehistoricstructureofthecity,rightly
perceivedasamuchmorecomplexwhole.Theywereprotectedby
