Howtodefinethiscultureinthemostconciseandsyntheticway?
Whatcommondenominatorofthesechangesdowefind?Ifwewanted
todefineinasinglewordtheperiodinwhichweareliving,wecould
mostprobablyusethetermof“postmodernity.”Thewordtosomepeople
maysoundoutmoded,whereastoothersweird.Yetthepostmodernist
worldexists,disregardingourapproval.Andacharacteristicfeatureofthis
worldisdepartingfromtheuniform,monolithicsocialorderforanew
pluralisticoneintermsofdissimilarityanddiversity
.
Insuchaworlditisunimportantwhatiscentraloressential,but
whatbecomespraiseworthyisculturalperipheralityandalternativeness.
Letusnoticethatwhatactuallycatchesourattentionistrulyofmarginal,
secondaryortrivialsignificance.Butthisisthepoint,andthepurposeis
todeprivethepostmodernistManagoalinlife,tomakehimroampur-
poselesslyinaworldofemptinessdevoidofanyvalues.Thepointisto
maketheMan,insteadofawayfarerorapilgrimonhiswaytohisdes-
tination,aroamer,relishingjustanyshredsofpleasure.
DeprivingtheManofthepilgrim’sdimension,focusedonthehori-
zonofsupernaturalityandeternity
,makesthesameMan,andthismay
soundparadoxical,giveuphisresponsibilityforhistemporality
