4.Themodernconceptof“freedom”inthelife
oftheChurch
Thesecondconcept,thebiblical-theologicalone,isbasedonthecon-
victionthattheChristianfaithisagenuineliberationofman.30Thekey
conceptofGreekphilosophyisthewordeleutheria(freedom),which,
irrespectiveoftheso-calledfreedomofchoice(becauseitistheresult,not
theessenceoffreedom),istheoppositeofslavishsinceitreferstoamlia-
tion,toasenseof“beingathome,”toco-responsibilityandsatisfaction:
“freeistheonewhoisathis/herplace,athome.”31TheBiblereinforces
theentireissueevenfurther:freeistheone,whoisbornofSarah,notof
Hagar,heshallhavearightofinheritance(cf.Galatians4:21—31).Sothe
diferencebetweenfreedomandslaveryisunderstoodhere“mostofall
onthestatus,thetypeofbelongingthatdefinesherightofinheritance,
therightofresidenceandownership.Tobefreemeanstobeanheir,that
is,tobetheowner,freedomisidenticalwiththesonhood(Galathians
4:5).32TheheiristheSon.AndwithHimallhisbrethrenandsisters.
Hereistheessenceofthematter:tobefreemeanstoparticipateinthe
statusofexistenceofJesusChrist,thestatusoftheSonofGod—with
alltheresponsibilityontheheirandthedignityofthechildofGod.The
biblical-theologicalconceptoffreedomwouldbethefollowing:
