Wearepuzzledbythevisiblediscrepancybetweenthesophisticated,realistic
economicknowledgeKaleckileftus,thehighreputationhisworkenjoysamong
professionals,thegrowingnumbersofneo-Kaleckianeconomistsdevelopinghis
approachtothestudyofcapitalistdynamicsandhisrelativeabsenceinthecore
mainstreamresearchandcurricula.Weproposetousethe(BigMäk,asatoolof
historyofeconomicthoughtforasummaryofKalecki,seconomicviewsandthus
provideanaccountofpossiblereasonsforKalecki,smixof(successandfailures,
aspostulatedbyamainstreamphilosopherofmainstreameconomics.
2.MichałKalecki’seconomicmodelling:successandfailure
Whatisattemptedbelowisanappraisaloffactorslikelytobepartoftheexpla-
nationforthesuccessand/orfailureofthemodellingworkoftheMichałKalecki
(Kalecki1990–1997:vols.I–VIIeditedadmirablybyJerzyOsiatyński).Theen-
tireopusofKaleckiistakenintoaccountand,givenspacelimitations,theassess-
mentofhisscientificpracticeisinevitablycursory.Ratherthanposingepistemic
questions,weusetheextendedmodel((BigMäk,)toposeandanswerquestions
ofpragmaticandinstitutionalcharacterrenderingitusefulinthehistoryofeco-
nomicthought.

MichałKalecki,s4primaryeducationwasinterruptedbyWWIandPrussianoccu-
pationbuthepersistedinlearningandmanagedtostudyindividually(advanced)
mathematics.FormalhighereducationofKaleckiconsistedofoneyearofmath-
ematics(atthedepartmentofphilosophyoftheWarsawUniversityin1920)and
twoyearsof(probably)constructionengineeringatGdańskPolytechnic.Hehad
notgraduated(onlyreceivedacertificate)5andsubsequentlyhenever,apart
fromtemporaryjobs,practicedtheengineeringprofession.
Hisfamilybeingindireeconomicsituation,6themathematicalandstatistical
skillsallowedhimtoentertheGconsultingmarket”,consistinginengineering
andstatisticalcalculationsaswellasbusinessaccounting.Itiseasytosuppose
thattheyoungman,stemperamentenrichedbymathematicalthinkingaswellas
earlyexperiencemadeKaleckilookatthesocialworldfromthepointofviewof
anengineerwhocherishedbeingcreativewithacalculablemathematicalmodel
ofhisown.
