WiththeWebusedmainlyasasourceofinformationtoberesearched,information
collectionandanalysisactivitieswillbemostfrequent.Gatheringdatabystudentswill
notinvolve,asissometimesthought,onlytechnicalcopyingandpastingpiecesoftext,
butthelanguagelearningeffortofextractingmainpointsandreconstructingthetext
inone'sownwords.Thesepurposesarereflectedinsuchtasksastreasurehuntsand
virtualfieldtrips,inwhichthephaseofinformationcollectionexecutedonlineislater
followedbyoff-lineinformationsharingoranalysis.
Aseparategroupoftasksconsistsinlanguageinteractionwithotherspeakersoutside
classwiththeuseofComputer-MediatedCommunicationtools.Thesecanencompass
partnerclassmembers,guestspeakersorinvitedexperts,eitherinsynchronous(real-
time)orasynchronous(email-orblog-based)interpersonalexchanges.Suchactivities
askeypalconnections,ask-an-expertorelectronicappearancesprovidetheteacher
withtheopportunitytointroducetheelementofrealtargetlanguageinteractioninto
classroominstruction.
Finally,thedevelopmentofinformationcollectionanalysisisthegroupofproblem-
solvingtasks,mostprominentlyrepresentedbyWebQuestsandonlineresearchmodules.
Intheseactivityformats,learnerscollectspecificinformationontheWeb,inorderto
lateruseitinoff-lineproblem-solvingcontexts.

1.1.TREASUREHUNTS(SCAVENGERHUNTS)
1.1.1.Definitionandtypology
Treasurehunts(alsoknownasknowledgehuntsorscavengerhunts)areinquiry-based
activitieswherestudentsusetheInternettofindanswerstoavarietyofquestions,
usuallyrelatedtoasingletopic(LuzonMarco,2001a).Brown(1999),whendefining
treasurehunts,emphasisesthecollaborativenatureoftheactivity,sayingthatstudents
workcooperativelyingroupsconnectedtoacomputeranduseInternetbrowsersto
searchforanswerstoavarietyofquestionsbylookingatvariouswebsitesandpages.
AccordingtoMarch(1996),treasurehuntsareInternet-basedactivitiesrelyingon
lookingforinformationessentialtounderstandingagiventopic(seeFigure1.1.below
forMarch'staxonomyofInternet-basedactivities).Harris(1995a)givesanexampleof
asimilartypeofactivity,called"informationsearches,"wherestudentsaregivenclues
