1.3.KEYPALEXCHANGES
Foranumberofyears,schoolpartnershipshavebeenregardedasanessentialelement
inlanguageteachingandlearning,asitishighlybeneficialforstudentstocooperate
withtheirpeersfromabroad.WhenlearningEnglishasaForeignLanguage,students
aremostofthetimeinanartificiallearningenvironment,wheretheteachermayalso
beanon-nativespeakerofEnglish,andwherestudentsdonothavetousethetarget
languagetocommunicatetheirideas,sincetheycandothesameintheirmothertongue.
Therefore,whenlearninginaclasslikethat,studentsdonotseeanimmediatepurpose
ofusingthetargetlanguage.
WiththeadventoftheInternetandwidespreadaccesstoemail,thetraditionalpen
palexchangehasbeenincreasinglyreplacedbykeypalexchanges.Harris(1994a),when
classifyingInternet-basedactivities,enumerateskeypalexchangesasoneofthe
interpersonalexchangestype,togetherwithelectronicappearances,electronicmentoring
andimpersonations.Inthistypeofactivity,studentsuseemail,discussiongroups,and
othermeansofComputer-MediatedCommunicationtoexecutelearningand/orteaching
goals,developinterculturalawarenessandfosterwritingskills,tonamejustafew.
1.3.1.Keypalactivitiesvs.traditionalexchanges
Inatraditionalclassroom,aWeb-basedschoolpartnershipisessentialforproviding
newmeansofinteractionandchannelsofcommunication,addingtheimportantelement
ofauthenticinteractioninthetargetlanguage.Thus,studentshavetousethetarget
languagetoconveytheirideas,emotionsorsuggestionsastheycannotcopeinany
otherway,therebyenforcingthetargetlanguageuse.Thecommunicationhasareal
purposeandismorenatural,becauseaforeignlanguageistreatedasthecommon
channelofcommunication.Thus,keypallinghelpstoaddressthecruciallyimportant
teachingobjectiveofpromotingtheattitudesofcuriosity,opennessandtolerance
