Theseprocessesarehiddencognitions,whoseexistenceispostulatedon

thebasisofobservablelinguisticbehaviourscalledentailments.Onlevel1the

categoryisendowedwithafocus(i.e.theprimaryinherentlyﬁxedcoordinate

asthestartingpoint)and–throughatentiontosimilarity–witharange:

acertainnumberofcolourstimuliareperceivedassimilartotheBufocus.

Onceatentiontosimilarityweakenssufcientlyfordiferencetobecomemore

prominentonlevel2,thecategoryreceivesitsboundaryormargin.

Crucially,thevalueofthewholearrangementderivesfromallofitslevels

asacoherentwhole,eventhoughonlyonelevelisfocusedonatanysingle

moment:
