Toacertaindegree,thechangesinthefamilymodelatthisjuncturecanbe
interpretedasposingathreattotheinstitutionofthefamilyitselfandtothe
conditionofmodernsocieties.3Evenachangefromthemodelofmaritalfamily
toitsvariousnon-maritalformshasitsefectonchildbirthrate,whichissubject
toadrasticdropobservedalsoinmaritalformsoffamily.Lookingatstatis-
ticaldataandtherapidlyemergingnewtheoriesofthefamily(post-modern
sociology),onecansafelystatethatthefamilyassuchisincrisis,atleastinits
previousshape.
AcrisisofthenuclearJudeo-Christianfamilyisvisibleinsocialpracticeand
theory,namely:
–intheappearanceofnew“families”inthepracticeofsociallifeonanunex-
pectedscalesofar;
–inthequestioningofthe“normality”ofthenuclearfamilybysociology(vali-
dationofnon-nuclearfamiliesbypostmodernsociology);
–intheincreaseinthenumberofdivorces,infringingonthereliabilityofthis
socialinstitutioninthepublicfeeling;
–inthedecreaseinthefertilityrate(weakeningreproductivemotivation);and
–inthedropinthevalueofthefamilyinfavourofotherculturalgoals(suchas
consumption,entertainment,andprofessionalcareer).
Inthischapterwewouldliketoelaborateontwooftheareasofcrisisoutlined
abovewhichtouchedfirstthemodelofextendedfamilyandnowareafecting
thenuclearfamily.Weconcentrateonnewconceptsofthefamily(post-modern
sociologyandnewtendencieswhichcanbecommonlynoticedintheareaof
familylife)andthedroppingfertilityrate.
Temeaningofthefamilyforthestabilityofsocietiesandforallpolitical
structurescannotbeoverestimated.Tisconcernsespeciallytheareaofrepro-
ductivefunction,whichitfulfills.Tisistheonlysocialgroupwhichappoints
itsmembersinanaturalwayandnotthroughrecruitmentprocesses.Oneofthe
bestknowneconomistsworldwide,JacquesAttali,intheinterviewforGazeta
Wyborcza4devotedtoworldwidefinancialcrisis,noticesacertainregularity.
TeUnitedStatesasacountryisindebt,asarethestatescontainedtherein,
e.g.,CaliforniaorTexas.GreatBritainisindebt,andsoisEngland.Japanese
deficitexceeded200%ofGNP.Greece,Italy,Francearealsouptoearsindebt.
GermanshavedebtsimilartotheFrenchonebutareinaworsesituationdueto
demographicreasonsandanegativenaturalgrowth,whichhasbeenregistered
thereformanyyears.ItisnotwithoutreasonsthatthisFrencheconomistrelates
theeconomicsituationofthestatetodemography.Todayweknowbeyond
doubtthatthereisastrictconnectionbetweenfertilityrateandtheconditionof
