withareflectionaboutthephenomenonofthepermanenceoflanguage.Contrary
toappearances,thisthemecontinuestobeasourceofmanyinterpretativeprob-
lems.Theauthorisinterestedaboveallinthebasicproblemsassociatedwithwhat
thispermanence(stability)isandwhetherthisphenomenonisactuallyhomo-
genousornot.Shedirectsthereader’sattentiontoacertainterminologicaland
conceptualconfusion,forontheonehand,inlinguisticresearchworksthefol-
lowingtermsareusedsynonymously:permanence,stability,duration,continuity
1inreferencetothesameconcepts,andontheotherhand,thesametermisap-
pliedtoheterogeneousphenomena.
